My son and I needed to kit up with some good quality rain gear for a trip to Tasmania. It’s fair to say that there’s a bucket-load of options on the market. However, a few things steered us towards Mont:
- Quality – Mont has built its reputation on quality gear that will last.
- Jacket length – I like a 3/4 length raincoat for bushwalking, but these are getting harder to find.
- Service and care tips – Mont products usually come with advice for caring for your gear, and the team in the Canberra store are super helpful and knowledgeable.
Mont Siena Jacket Womens
The Siena jacket is sturdy, made from Hydronaught 3 layer waterproof fabric. It has a high waterhead rating and is also an excellent buffer against icy wind.
The sizing is true to size and well proportioned, with no tight sleeves when warn over thick layers. The pockets are capacious, with two in front, and another on the inside at chest level.
Zips and pockets are well designed with overlapping fabric to minimise water getting in. The double zip allows you to unzip from the bottom, giving you good freedom of movement while you walk.
It’s a thick jacket, and you do get the inevitable condensation, but overall it’s fairly breathable.
Weighing a 660 grams, it’s not the lightest, but for alpine walking you don’t want some flimsy little jacket.
Mont Kids Austral Rain Jacket
If there are limited options for adults when it comes to long length rain jackets, this was even more so when it came to kids jackets. Thankfully Mont had the goods.
The Austral is made of Hydronaught Pro fabric, and compared to the Siena, you can see the water beading better with this new and improved waterproof fabric.
The kids jacket has the same quality workmanship and similar features to the adult jackets. It has two pockets at the front, and though less capacious than the Siena, these were ample room for a child to stash gloves or a muesli bar.
It comes in bright colours – red or green – which is good for keeping visibility of little people as they dart off through the trees.
Unlike the Siena, the Austral doesn’t have the layer of material covering the zip, but it is well sealed and leakage is unlikely to be a major issue.
Weight is 340 grams.
